Nepal Telecom warns VAS providers over circulation of offensive SMS

KATHMANDU: Nepal Telecom has warned Value Added Services (VAS) providers after offensive and inappropriate messages were found being circulated to mobile users through its system.

The state-owned telecom company said it has issued clear instructions to service providers not to send messages that could harm ethnic, class-based, religious, communal or political harmony.

Nepal Telecom also signaled that strict action will be taken against any provider found sending such messages to the public in the future.

Reiterating its commitment to customer privacy, the company said it does not share any subscriber’s personal mobile number or other details with third parties, stressing that it remains highly sensitive to the protection of user data.

The move comes amid growing public concern over the misuse of bulk messaging and VAS platforms to circulate controversial and disruptive content.
