KATHMANDU: India has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for up to 18 hours a day from September 13 to December 31, 2026.
India’s Ministry of Power has granted approval to supply electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) from midnight to 6 pm every day.
According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of India, up to 600 megawatts of electricity will be exported through the 400 kV double-circuit Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar transmission line.
Similarly, India has permitted the export of an additional 54 megawatts through the 132 kV single-circuit Tanakpur-Mahendranagar transmission line.
The quantity of electricity to be exported to Nepal from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026, according to India’s Ministry of Power.
Nepal’s domestic electricity generation capacity has declined following recent floods that caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure. India approved the additional electricity supply to address the resulting increase in Nepal’s electricity requirements.
India said the decision would help Nepal meet its electricity needs during the difficult situation and further strengthen long-term energy cooperation between the two countries.
India has also reiterated its commitment to continuing support to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Nepal in the energy sector.
