KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has sought a written response from the authorities in a writ petition filed against the controversial ‘Green Army’, which has drawn criticism for appearing in public wearing military-style uniforms.
The petition concerns the organisation’s structure, uniforms, ranks and use of insignia. A single bench of Justice Nityananda Pandey on Monday ordered the defendants, including the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, to submit written responses within 15 days.
The order was issued in response to a writ petition seeking certiorari and mandamus filed by advocate Samb Raj Aryal and others.
The court directed defendants numbered 1 to 7, 9 and 10 to submit their written responses through the Office of the Attorney General, while defendants 8 and 11 were instructed to respond themselves or through a legally authorised representative.
The petitioner had also sought an interim order. Considering the nature and seriousness of the matter, the court said it would be appropriate to reach a decision on the interim order after holding discussions between both sides.
The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for September 21 to discuss the interim order. The court has also directed that the defendants be informed about the hearing.
