KATHMANDU: The bodies of 1,392 people who died in the Bhotekoshi flood on August 26 have been recovered so far, while 4,089 people remain missing.
According to the latest details released by the Police Headquarters, Naxal, the recovered remains include 542 men, 336 women, and 514 partially recovered or unidentified bodies. Police said 103 of the recovered bodies have so far been handed over to their relatives.
Nepal Police Spokesperson Abinarayan Kafle said 2,907 men and 572 women are among those still missing. Similarly, 272 male and 328 female foreign nationals have been reported missing, according to the police.
A total of 9,287 injured people have been rescued following the flood. Of them, 6,407 are men, 2,830 are women, and 50 remain unidentified, according to the Police Headquarters.
Spokesperson Kafle said 2,781 of those rescued have been safely accommodated at holding centres. DNA testing has been prioritized to identify missing persons and the recovered bodies.
The Bhotekoshi flood has caused a significant loss of life and widespread devastation. Nepal Police, the Nepal Army, the Armed Police Force, and other concerned government agencies have been mobilized in the affected areas for search and rescue operations, as well as for the identification of missing persons and recovered bodies.
