KATHMANDU: Former Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Dhawal Shumsher Rana and Durga Prasai have ended their political alliance just two months after joining forces to form a new political force.
Following the split, Rana reached the Election Commission on Friday along with some of his supporters to register a new political party.
Rana, who had resigned as RPP general secretary, submitted an application to register the “Jai Nepal Party” at the Election Commission.
The two leaders had been working together until Thursday, but differences emerged shortly before the party registration process was finalized.
Rana and Prasai had joined forces two months ago with the stated objective of restoring the monarchy and establishing a Hindu state.
Under their agreement, Rana was to serve as party chairperson while Prasai was designated the “supreme leader.” They had also agreed to form a 101-member central committee comprising 40 members from Rana’s side, 40 from Prasai’s side and 20 neutral members. The alliance had selected a triangle as its proposed election symbol.
However, the partnership collapsed over a dispute regarding leadership hierarchy just as preparations for party registration were being finalized. Prasai had insisted on being placed first in the party’s leadership hierarchy. Rana rejected the demand, resulting in the breakdown of their alliance.
Prasai subsequently criticized Rana, saying that “the Ranas do not want to bring back the monarchy.” The two sides also disagreed over the timing of the party registration, further widening their differences and ultimately ending their political partnership.
