KATHMANDU: The Department of Mines and Geology has reported a sharp decline in revenue collected from the extraction, production and export of minerals in the last fiscal year.
The department collected Rs 894.8 million in revenue in fiscal year 2025/26, down from Rs 1.59 billion in the previous fiscal year. The revenue declined by around 44 percent, or nearly Rs 700 million, compared to fiscal year 2024/25.
According to department spokesperson and Deputy Director General Ganesh Nath Tripathi, the department generates revenue through the issuance and renewal of mining exploration and extraction permits, land lease fees, and charges for maps and reports, among other sources.
The department grants permits for the extraction of minerals including limestone, red soil, metals and stones with the aim of supporting industrial production and economic development in the country.
It has also issued permits for the exploration and extraction of minerals including tourmaline, talc, quartz, kyanite, marble, iron, zinc, quartzite, magnesite, dolomite and copper.
The department is responsible for mining permits, mineral processing, monitoring and dispute resolution, economic studies and promotion of petroleum resources, exploration of metallic and non-metallic minerals, mining drilling, engineering geological studies and earthquake measurement, among other activities.
