Night bus service launched on key routes in Kathmandu Valley

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has launched night bus services from today in collaboration with Sajha Yatayat.

The service was inaugurated this evening at Pulchowk, with Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol announcing the launch.

According to the metropolitan office, the night bus service will initially operate on two major routes within the Kathmandu Valley.

The first route runs from Lagankhel in Lalitpur to Budhanilkantha, passing through major hospitals including Patan Hospital, Alka Hospital, Norvic Hospital, the Maternity Hospital, Trauma Centre, Bir Hospital, Kanti Hospital, Teaching Hospital, and Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre.

The second route operates from Thankot to Tribhuvan International Airport, passing through Kalanki, Tripureshwar, Thapathali, Maitighar Mandala, Baneshwar, Minbhawan, and Tinkune.

The metropolitan city said the 16-kilometre north–south route and the 20-kilometre east–west route will be served by four electric buses in total.

Officials said the service aims to address difficulties faced by passengers after regular public transport stops operating in the evening, forcing people to rely on expensive alternatives.

The buses will operate from 8 pm to 11 pm, with services available every 20 minutes at designated stops. CCTV cameras will be installed in all buses, and municipal police will be deployed to ensure passenger safety.
