Traffic management plan enforced in Pashupati area for Maha Shivaratri

KATHMANDU: Preparations have been completed at the Pashupatinath Temple area for this year’s Maha Shivaratri festival, which falls on Sunday.

Authorities have carried out painting, cleaning, and other maintenance works in the Pashupati premises. A large number of sadhus and saints have already arrived at the temple area. Security agencies have also finalized crowd management plans in view of the expected influx of devotees.

The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office has prepared a special traffic management plan to ensure smooth movement and facilitate worship for pilgrims and visitors.

Traffic police said designated parking areas have been arranged for those visiting Pashupati for worship. Vehicular movement in the Gaushala area will only be restricted if traffic congestion becomes unmanageable due to excessive crowds. In such cases, alternative routes will be implemented to ensure smooth transportation.

Authorities have arranged for uninterrupted traffic flow in Chabahil, Gaushala and Tilganga areas. However, if congestion disrupts vehicle movement, diversion plans will be enforced as needed.

Heavy vehicles coming from Tinkune towards Sinamangal, from the Bouddha area towards Gaurighat, and those entering from Old Baneshwor, Gaushala and Mitrapark may be restricted depending on the situation.

Vehicles arriving via the Bagmati Corridor and from Jorpati through Chabahil will be directed to designated parking areas across Gujeshwori. If congestion intensifies at Gaushala Chowk, diversions will be implemented for vehicles traveling from Chabahil to Gaushala, Old Baneshwor to Gaushala, and from the Gyaneshwor-Maitidevi junction via Ratopul to Gaushala. Vehicles operating from Sifal Chowk towards Jay Bageshwori will also be rerouted through alternative roads if necessary.

Parking arrangements

Traffic police have designated the following parking areas:

  1. Sifal Chowk – Vehicles of devotees, pass holders, and security personnel.
  2. Gujeshwori area (across the Bagmati) – Vehicles of pilgrims and visitors.
  3. Pashupati Area Development Trust office premises and Bhandarkhal – Pass-holder vehicles.
  4. Tilganga Eye Hospital and corridor area – Vehicles of pilgrims, visitors and tourists.
  5. Bankali area – Vehicles of organizations operating camps, fire engines, ambulances, drinking water supply vehicles and security personnel.
  6. Gaushala Police Circle – Pass-holder and government vehicles.

Authorities have urged the public to follow traffic instructions and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a safe and orderly celebration of Maha Shivaratri.
