DHANGADHI: Sudurpaschim Province Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah is set to seek a vote of confidence from the provincial assembly today.
According to Tara Kumari Joshi, information officer at the Province Assembly Secretariat, Shah will seek the vote of confidence during today’s provincial assembly meeting.
Shah was compelled to face the floor test after the CPN-UML, a coalition partner in his government, withdrew its support on July 15.
Under the constitutional provision, a provincial government must seek a vote of confidence or resign within 30 days of a coalition partner withdrawing its support.
Chief Minister Shah wrote to Province Assembly Speaker Bhim Bahadur Bhandari on Wednesday, requesting that the assembly meeting be called to conduct the vote of confidence.
Congress has 18 seats
The 53-member Sudurpaschim Provincial Assembly has 18 members from the Nepali Congress, while the Nepali Communist Party has 22 members, including the Speaker.
The CPN-UML has 11 members, while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party has one lawmaker.
Shah will need to secure a majority of the total 53-member assembly to retain his position as chief minister.
