State must not ignore shelter, dignity and future of citizens while enforcing laws: Nembang

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML lawmaker Suhang Nembang has said that while enforcing laws, the state cannot ignore citizens’ shelter, family security, children’s future, and human dignity.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives’ Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee held at Singha Durbar on Monday, Nembang urged the government to take the issue of landless squatters’ rehabilitation seriously.

He said the government’s initiatives to provide relief, temporary arrangements, and begin the process of distributing land ownership certificates to landless and squatters were positive, but their implementation had not been effective.

During the parliamentary committee’s monitoring of the holding centre where displaced squatters were kept, citizens had shown significant trust in the government, but that confidence has now eroded, he said.

Nembang urged the government to clearly identify genuine landless and vulnerable communities and present a time-bound rehabilitation plan that includes safe housing, employment, healthcare, and education.

He also called for the issue of citizens staying at holding centres not to be limited to formal discussions and monitoring, urging the government to provide regular updates on actions taken for their welfare in every committee meeting.
