DHM warns of flash floods in small rivers over next three days



KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has warned of possible flash floods in small rivers across several districts over the next three days as heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in many parts of the country.

According to the department, small rivers in Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Saptari, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun, Makawanpur, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Chitwan, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West, Palpa, Kaski, Parbat, Myagdi, Syangja, Kailali and surrounding districts are at risk of flash flooding.

DHM hydrologist Binod Parajuli said Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavrepalanchok and nearby districts are also at high risk of sudden flooding.

The department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in many mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces on Monday afternoon, with similar conditions expected at a few locations in the mountainous regions of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is also likely across many hilly and Tarai areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as parts of Madhesh, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. Some hilly and mountainous areas of Karnali Province are also expected to receive significant rainfall.

Heavy rainfall is forecast at a few places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, while one or two locations in the Tarai of those provinces, including Madhesh Province, may also experience intense rainfall.

For Monday night, the department has forecast generally to mostly cloudy conditions across the country, with Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces expected to remain mostly cloudy.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in the hilly and Tarai regions of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, while heavy rain is expected at isolated locations in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

The department has urged residents living near rivers and streams, particularly in vulnerable districts, to remain alert as water levels may rise rapidly following intense rainfall.
