Kathmandu hosts high-level meeting on India–Nepal cross-border railway projects

KATHMANDU: A high-level meeting has been held in Kathmandu to review progress on ongoing India–Nepal cross-border railway projects and strengthen bilateral cooperation in the railway sector.

The meeting, held on June 11 and 12, brought together officials for the 10th Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting and the 8th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between Nepal and India.

According to officials, discussions focused on reviewing implementation status, construction progress and future plans related to ongoing cross-border railway connectivity projects.

Both sides also exchanged views on enhancing overall bilateral cooperation in the railway sector.

Delegations from Nepal and India expressed confidence that expansion of cross-border railway networks would further strengthen trade, connectivity, tourism and people-to-people relations between the two countries.

The meeting also discussed railway infrastructure development, technical cooperation and potential future projects.

Nepal and India have already operationalised the Jaynagar–Kurtha–Bijalpura railway line, while several additional cross-border rail connectivity projects remain at different stages of implementation.

Officials believe such projects will not only expand physical connectivity but also elevate economic partnership between the two neighbouring countries.
