NC establishment faction maintains stance against immediate leadership change

KATHMANDU: Talks at the Nepali Congress special general convention have failed to reach a concrete conclusion as the establishment faction remains firm in its position against an immediate change in leadership.

Leaders from the non-establishment side, including general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, have been advocating for a change in leadership before heading into elections.

However, leaders close to party president Sher Bahadur Deuba are unwilling to alter the leadership at this stage, causing negotiations to stall.

According to leaders involved in the talks, the establishment faction has shown flexibility on other issues but remains rigid on the question of changing the leadership. Discussions have also failed to progress as leaders close to Deuba are not prepared to hand over full responsibility to acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka.

Despite the deadlock, establishment leaders participating in the talks have claimed that an agreement could still be reached overnight. Earlier, establishment leader Shyam Ghimire had also said that negotiations were likely to yield positive results by late night.
