Loan shark victim attempts self-immolation during protest outside Dhanusha District Court

JANAKPUR: A woman affected by exploitative money lending attempted self-immolation during a protest outside the Dhanusha District Court in Janakpurdham on Wednesday.

Phulkumari Rajak, a resident of Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City-4, poured petrol over herself while victims of exploitative lending were staging a protest and chanting slogans outside the court.

Police intervened immediately as Rajak was attempting to set herself on fire and prevented the incident.

A detention hearing was underway at the Dhanusha District Court on Wednesday against three alleged loan sharks—Gopal Sah, Rekha Sah and Hareram Sah.

Victims of exploitative lending were protesting outside the court while arguments were being heard against the accused.

The protesters were demanding justice and action to address what they described as injustices they had suffered in disputes involving exploitative lending.

Police said Rajak was taken into custody following the incident and was being questioned.
