Government, Kathmandu Metropolitan and Ganesh Nepali’s family reach nine-point agreement

KATHMANDU: The federal government, Kathmandu Metropolitan City and the family of Ganesh Nepali have reached a nine-point agreement over the death of the 25-year-old, who died while undergoing treatment after attempting self-immolation in Tripureshwor.

The agreement was signed on Sunday following talks held in the presence of Kathmandu Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Paudel.

Under the agreement, the government will form an independent investigation committee led by a former judge to conduct an impartial probe into the incident. The committee has been tasked with submitting its report within seven days of its formation.

The parties also agreed to provide relief to the bereaved family, arrange employment for Nepali’s wife and ensure funding for his daughter’s education through higher studies.

The agreement states that a decision on declaring Ganesh Nepali a martyr will be taken in accordance with existing laws, past practices and the recommendations of the investigation committee.

The District Administration Office will write to Kathmandu Metropolitan City requesting the suspension of the municipal police personnel who were on the front line during the incident. Any further disciplinary action will be based on the findings of the investigation committee.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has agreed to provide Nepali’s wife with employment based on her qualifications and abilities and to bear the full cost of their daughter’s education up to the higher education level.

The metropolitan city will also provide relief assistance to the family following a decision by its executive committee and will manage all arrangements related to the funeral and post-funeral rites in Kathmandu.
