NC leader Mohan Basnet provides Rs 100,000 to family of Ganesh Nepali

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Mohan Basnet has provided Rs 100,000 in financial assistance to the family of Ganesh Nepali, who died after setting himself on fire outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor.

Basnet met the deceased’s family on Sunday and handed over the assistance to Nepali’s mother, citing the family’s difficult financial condition in their remote home district.

He also pledged to support the education of Nepali’s daughter up to the bachelor’s level if Kathmandu Metropolitan City does not provide educational assistance.

Basnet said he had previously helped educate more than 300 people affected by floods and landslides in Melamchi and Helambu of Sindhupalchok by bringing them to Kathmandu.

Speaking to reporters, the former minister said traffic fines in Nepal should not be fixed solely by comparing them with international standards. Instead, he argued that penalties should remain reasonable while greater emphasis should be placed on public awareness and road safety education.

He also criticised the government for failing to properly identify and manage genuine landless squatters.

Basnet further accused the government of focusing on dismantling existing systems and pursuing political vendettas during its first 100 days in office rather than prioritising people-centred governance.
