KATHMANDU: Talks are underway between the family of Ganesh Nepali, who died after attempting self-immolation, and government representatives to reach an agreement.
The negotiations are being held at the District Police Office and include Nepali’s wife Ekmaya Nepali, brother Madan Nepali, Hikmat Shahi, Dharmaraj Shahi, Mugu lawmaker Khadga Bahadur Shahi, and others.
Previous rounds of talks failed to reach a conclusion, and Nepali’s body remains at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
The District Administration Office, representing the government, had earlier proposed a six-point agreement with the deceased’s family. The proposal includes providing employment to Nepali’s wife, taking responsibility for the care of his parents, and ensuring free higher education for his daughter through Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
According to Shahi, the family and relatives are also demanding that Ganesh Nepali be declared a martyr. They have called for legal recognition of his work as a ride-sharing driver, legal action against the city police personnel allegedly involved in the incident, guaranteed employment for his wife, free higher education for his daughter, and government responsibility for the care of his parents.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City had stated on Friday that it would provide employment support and free education for Nepali’s family.
Talks between the government and the family continued until late Saturday at the District Administration Office in Kathmandu but ended without an agreement.
Nepali, who attempted self-immolation on Thursday, died while undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital on Friday morning. His body was later transferred to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj.
A five-member investigation committee led by DIG Govinda Thapaliya of the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari, is investigating the circumstances surrounding Nepali’s death.
Nepali, originally from Jamaldhara, Soru Rural Municipality-6 of Mugu district, had been living in Kamalbinayak, Bhaktapur.
