Government, Kathmandu Metropolitan and Ganesh Nepali’s family reach nine-point agreement
The federal government, Kathmandu Metropolitan City and the family of Ganesh Nepali have reached a nine-point agreement over the death of the 25-year-old, who died while undergoing treatment after attempting self-immolation in Tripureshwor. The agreement was signed on Sunday following talks held in the presence of Kathmandu Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Paudel. Under the agreement, the government will form an independent investigation committee led by a former judge to conduct an impartial probe into the incident. The committee has been tasked with submitting its report within seven days of its formation. The parties also agreed to provide relief to the bereaved family, arrange employment for Nepali’s wife and ensure funding for his daughter’s education through higher studies.
PM Balen Shah, RSP chair Rabi Lamichhane hold four-hour meeting
Prime Minister Balen Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane held a four-hour meeting at Lamichhane’s residence in Budhanilkantha on Sunday. According to sources close to the two leaders, the meeting focused on the country’s latest political developments, the situation of displaced landless families and other current national issues. Officials from both secretariats said Lamichhane advised the prime minister to assess the changing political situation and respond accordingly. The two leaders also discussed the management of landless squatters and growing public dissatisfaction over the government’s handling of the issue, according to the sources.
Home minister says government committed to long-term solution to landless settlers’ issue
Home Minister Sudan Gurung has said the government is committed to finding a long-term solution to the problems faced by landless settlers. Speaking during an interaction with families temporarily staying at the Nepal Electricity Authority’s training centre in Kharipati, Bhaktapur, Gurung said the government was focused on addressing the concerns of landless and homeless citizens. “Your problems are also the government’s problems. We have taken them seriously,” the home minister said, urging the displaced families to cooperate with the government’s efforts. Gurung said the issue of landless settlers should not be politicised, stressing that all stakeholders should support the government’s initiative to reach a lasting solution.
89 squatters from 31 families relocated from Kirtipur to Kharipati Holding Center
Eighty-nine squatters from 31 families have been relocated from the Radhaswamy Holding Center in Kirtipur to the Kharipati Holding Center in Bhaktapur after the facility was flooded due to continuous rainfall. The displaced families were transferred to Kharipati on Saturday and Sunday morning, with 89 individuals from 31 families being moved during the two days. Some of the displaced squatters have also been relocated to Bode in Bhaktapur. The government had earlier removed squatter settlements from the banks of the Bagmati River, including the Thapathali area. However, a long-term management plan for the displaced families has yet to be completed.
Durga Prasai claims Balen Shah-led government will not last until Dashain
Medical entrepreneur and coordinator of the Nation, Nationality, Religion, Culture and Citizen Protection Campaign, Durga Prasai, has claimed that the government led by Balen Shah will not remain in office until Dashain. Prasai made the remarks at a press conference at his residence in Thimi, Bhaktapur, on Sunday after being detained by police upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and later released. He alleged that the current administration would fall through the same process by which it came to power. During the press conference, Prasai also accused the government of attempting to implicate him in legal cases, saying efforts to “frame” him would not succeed.
Prime Minister Balen Shah set to form ‘PM Delivery Unit’
A Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit (PM Delivery Unit) is set to be established within the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. The PM Delivery Unit will be responsible for monitoring implementation and coordinating among government agencies to ensure the effective execution of the 18-point National Commitment approved by the Council of Ministers. It may be noted that the Balen Shah-led government had earlier unveiled a 100-point governance reform agenda. Building on that agenda, the National Commitment was prepared by incorporating the manifestos, pledges, and commitments of the six nationally recognized political parties that contested the March 5 elections and secured representation. Several commitments outlined in the document have already been incorporated into the government’s annual policy, programs, and budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2026/27.
United National Squatters’ Front protests in Maitighar
The United National Squatters’ Front staged a protest at Maitighar in Kathmandu, accusing the government of evicting squatters without making adequate resettlement arrangements on Sunday. The protest intensified after floodwaters entered a temporary holding centre in Kirtipur on Saturday morning, forcing displaced families to evacuate. Demonstrators also expressed anger over the detention of a Gen-Z activist later the same day.
Gold, silver prices see moderate fluctuations
Gold and silver prices recorded moderate fluctuations in the local market today. Compared to last Friday, the price of gold increased by Rs 600 per tola, while silver fell by Rs 35 per tola. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Federation, fine gold was traded at Rs 288,000 per tola today, while silver is priced at Rs 4,475 per tola. Last Friday, fine gold was traded at Rs 287,400 per tola, while silver was priced at Rs 4,510 per tola.
Nepalgunj Sub-metropolitan City approves Rs 1.76 billion budget
The Nepalgunj Sub-metropolitan City Assembly has approved a budget of Rs 1.76 billion for the upcoming fiscal year. The 19th Municipal Assembly, under the chairmanship of Mayor Prashanta Bista, endorsed proposals for the beautification of the Bagishwari Temple area and Khadeshwor Junge Mahadev Temple, construction of a 108-foot Hanuman statue, commercial buildings, an entrance gate at the Jamunaha checkpoint, and a city bus park. The assembly also stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Nepalgunj Ring Road will be completed soon, after which the project implementation process will move forward.
Durga Prasai arrested at airport, taken home by police vehicle over concerns about statements
Police arrested campaigner Durga Prasai at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Sunday. Prasai was taken into custody after arriving in Kathmandu on a flight from Jhapa, police said. He had been scheduled to hold a press conference at the airport. Following his arrest, police escorted him to his residence in Bhaktapur. Whenever Durga Prasai arrives in Kathmandu, Tribhuvan International Airport is usually crowded with YouTubers and online content creators hoping to capture his remarks. On Sunday, however, they left disappointed. Content creators who gathered at the airport were barred from entering the arrival area after police stopped them at the airport’s main entrance. Instead of addressing the media as expected, Prasai left the airport in a police vehicle.
Sub-Division Forest Office produces 35,000 seedlings in a year
The Ramdhuni-based Sub-Division Forest Office of Sunsari has been producing and distributing over 35,000 seedlings of varieties of species for free of cost every year. The seedlings are of cash crops, flowers, fruits and forest trees. The Office has recorded increasing rise in demand of seedlings produced in the nursery, which had come into operation four years back. According to forest assistant at Ramdhuni Sub-Division Forest Office, Kaji Acharya, various species of seedlings such as khayar, jacaranda, lemon, sisau, wood apple, guava and tejpat are produced in the nursery.
Dumre-Besisahar travel easier after landslide control at Udipur
With the structures in place to control landslide at Udipur along the Dumre-Besisahar road, vehicular movement has become easier and safer even during the rainy season. The structures were built at a cost of Rs 111.9 million by the federal government. According to information officer at the Dumre-Besisahar-Chame Road Planning Office, Navin Bista, micropiles have been constructed along the Marsyangdi River, which provides a protective wall on the river bank. Similarly, a 45-metre high and 80-metre long gabion mesh, 300-metre road blacktop and nailing were constructed in the area hit by landslide above the road.
Actor Deepa Shree Niraula undergoes successful brain tumour surgery
Nepali actor and filmmaker Deepa Shree Niraula has undergone successful surgery after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, actor Deepak Raj Giri said on Sunday. According to Giri, the tumour was detected during the shooting of a film earlier this week, prompting doctors to recommend immediate surgery. The operation was performed at Annapurna Neuro Hospital in Maitighar by neurosurgeon Dr. Basanta Pant. Giri said the team had received suggestions to seek treatment in India but ultimately decided to proceed with surgery in Nepal under the care of Dr. Pant.
Ministers visit relocated landless families in Bhaktapur after Kirtipur flooding
A team of ministers visited landless families relocated to Kharipati in Bhaktapur after flooding inundated the Radhaswami Holding Centre in Sundarighat, Kirtipur. The government has relocated 89 people from 31 families from the holding centre in Kirtipur Municipality-10 to Kharipati over the past two days. Some families have also been moved to Bode in Bhaktapur. The relocation followed flooding at the holding centre, where the families had been staying after being displaced from settlements along the Bagmati River. During Sunday’s visit, Home Minister Sudan Gurung, Health Minister Nisha Mehta, Education Minister Sasmita Pokharel, Labour Minister Ramji Yadav, Minister for Women Sita Badi, and Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Pratibha Rawal met with the relocated families.
