Active monsoon to trigger heavy rain today



KATHMANDU: Monsoon activity is expected to bring widespread rainfall across Nepal today, with the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology warning of moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms and isolated spells of very heavy rain.

According to the Department’s Weather Forecasting Division, monsoon winds are currently affecting the entire country. The monsoon’s low-pressure line lies slightly north of its average position in the western region and near Nepal’s Terai in the eastern region.

The Division said skies are generally cloudy nationwide, with light to moderate rainfall already occurring in parts of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Karnali provinces, as well as at one or two locations in Sudurpaschim Province.

This afternoon, most parts of the country will remain cloudy. Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in some places across the Himalayan region and in many areas of the hilly region.

Moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is also expected in many places in Madhes Province and the Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as in some areas of the Terai in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Heavy rainfall is possible at one or two locations in the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, including Madhes Province.

Tonight, skies will remain mostly cloudy over Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, while Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to be generally cloudy.

Moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is likely in the mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and at some locations in the mountainous regions of the remaining provinces.

Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning is also likely in the hilly and Terai areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, in some places across the hilly and Terai areas of Lumbini Province, and in the hilly and Terai regions of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The division has also warned of the possibility of very heavy rainfall at a few locations in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two places in the Terai and hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, including Madhes Province.
