Purna Bahadur Khadka voices dissatisfaction over NC central committee expansion

KATHMANDU: Purna Bahadur Khadka has expressed dissatisfaction over the recent expansion of the central working committee of the Nepali Congress, stressing the need for “broad and complete unity” within the party.

In a statement shared through social media, former acting party president Khadka said he was seriously concerned about various comments surrounding the expansion process, confusion among party cadres, and questions raised regarding his own role in the matter.

Khadka revealed that he had held separate discussions a few weeks ago with party president Gagan Kumar Thapa and later a joint meeting with Thapa and vice-president Bishwa Prakash Sharma.

According to Khadka, the discussions focused on what he described as growing threats to nationalism, the difficult situation facing the Nepali Congress, and continued attacks on constitutionalism, democracy, and the party’s core values in the name of populism.

He emphasized that the Congress cannot play an effective, interventionist, and meaningful role in national politics without complete internal unity.

“Without broad and complete unity within the Nepali Congress, we cannot play an effective, interventionist, and meaningful role in national politics,” Khadka stated.

He said the primary responsibility for ensuring party unity now rests with Gagan Thapa and subsequently with Bishwa Prakash Sharma, urging all leaders and members to engage in a campaign to unite the party completely.

Khadka also clarified that he had neither been informed nor consulted regarding the central committee nominations reportedly made on Baisakh 28.

“The decision taken on May 11 has hurt the objective of achieving broad and complete party unity,” he said.

Recalling the political losses suffered by the Nepali Congress during past internal splits, Khadka noted that divisions within the party had weakened public trust.

He said the party leadership at the time had eventually undertaken self-reflection and restored both organizational and emotional unity to move the party forward.

Referring to the results of the general elections held on Falgun 21, Khadka said the outcome had served as a serious wake-up call for the Congress.

He stressed the need for the party to learn lessons from the results and move ahead with a new vision, shared thinking, and complete unity.

Despite his concerns, Khadka expressed confidence that the party leadership would still move forward with a collective spirit, shared ideas, and a commitment to broader unity.
