Nepali woman held hostage, raped in Virginia

KATHMANDU: Police in Virginia are investigating the alleged kidnapping and rape of a young Nepali woman who was lured to the state by the promise of employment.

The woman, who arrived in the United States on a Diversity Visa on May 1, 2025, shared her harrowing ordeal via social media, seeking justice from the Nepali community and local authorities.

According to the woman’s account, she initially stayed in Texas for a month before moving to Virginia in September 2025 to seek employment. While staying at a temporary residence, she met a Nepali man at a local 7-Eleven. The individual, identified as Madan from Jhapa, Nepal, reportedly introduced himself as a manager and promised to secure a job for her within a few days.

The woman alleges that Madan lured her to his apartment under the pretext of discussing work opportunities. Once there, he reportedly assaulted her and held her hostage in the flat starting on October 5, 2025. During her period of captivity, she claims she was subjected to physical and mental torture, repeated sexual assault, and death threats intended to prevent her from contacting the police or the Nepali community.

The woman further stated that following the incident, she was misrepresented to the police as having a mental health crisis. She was subsequently admitted to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation; however, after a thorough medical examination, doctors discharged her, confirming she had no serious mental health issues.

Currently in a safe location, the woman has appealed to the Nepali diaspora and human rights organizations to stand by her and is demanding strict legal action against the accused. The Nepali community in the United States has reacted with outrage, urging US law enforcement agencies to conduct a transparent investigation into the case to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice.
