Cricketer Karan KC banned for one match

Fined full match fee for social media remarks on umpires

KATHMANDU: The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has handed Nepal Police Club player Karan KC a one-match ban along with a fine equivalent to 100 percent of his match fee.

CAN took disciplinary action after concluding that KC’s remarks directed at match officials on social media during the Prime Minister’s Cup One-Day National Cricket Tournament 2082 BS were against the spirit of the game.

According to the Association, the decision was taken to maintain discipline among players in coordination with relevant stakeholders. A press statement issued by CAN spokesperson Chhumbi Lama stated that adherence to the spirit of the game and disciplinary standards is mandatory for all players.

What had happened?

KC had posted a cautionary remark on social media on Saturday questioning potential disciplinary action if a player were to accidentally make contact with an umpire during a match.

Following his post, the Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association convened an emergency meeting and formally objected to his comments in writing.

KC later deleted the post and issued an apology on Saturday. However, the Umpires Association maintained that an apology alone was insufficient. Its president, Mohammad Shafiq, said disciplinary action was necessary, stating, “We have taken this as a serious matter. An apology from players is not enough. We are confident CAN will take necessary action.”

Meanwhile, CAN spokesperson Lama said the Association is also reviewing the misunderstanding between players and umpires.

He added that the decision was made based on the match referee’s report, in accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct, CAN’s player agreement regulations, and the rules of the Prime Minister’s Cup tournament.
