Birat Gold Cup Football tourney: Jhapa-11 secures opening win



MORANG: Jhapa-11 registered a victory in the inaugural match of the Birat Gold Cup Football Tournament, which kicked off on Saturday.

In the opening fixture held under floodlights at Biratnagar’s Shaheed Rangashala, Jhapa-11 defeated Tribhuvan Army Club 2–1 in a knockout-format match organized by the Birat Gold Cup Football Trust.

Phaguram Tharu scored twice for Jhapa-11, finding the net in the 10th and 44th minutes. Nabin Lama scored the lone goal for the Army team in the 23rd minute. Tharu was named Player of the Match and received a cash prize of Rs 11,000. The tournament features eight teams from Nepal and India.

Held under the slogan “Football Festival, Biratnagar’s Pride: Birat Gold Cup,” participating teams include Nepal Police Club, Tribhuvan Army Football Club, Machhindra Football Club, Nepal APF Football Club, Church Boys United, Samrat Sporting Club (Biratnagar), Jhapa-11 Football Club, and Birsa Munda Football Academy (Jharkhand, India).

According to organizers, Sunday’s match will be played between Nepal APF Club and Church Boys United.
