Mundum trail: A confluence of nature and culture

BHOJPUR: Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality in Bhojpur district, has prioritized the holistic development of the Mundum trail by placing nature and culture at its core.

The trail is being promoted as a distinctive tourism destination while preserving the region’s natural beauty, biodiversity, and the traditional heritage of the Kirant Rai community.

According to Rural Municipality Chairperson Saroj Basnet, the development of the trail is being carried out with a strong focus on protecting both culture and the environment. He said the municipality has adopted a policy of promoting eco-friendly tourism while conserving biodiversity in surrounding forest areas.

“Tourism cannot thrive without the preservation of nature,” Basnet said, adding that the municipality is also working to safeguard and promote local cultural traditions. Along the trail, visitors can observe structures, cultural symbols, and religious sites connected to the rituals and the Mundum tradition of the Kirant Rai community.

Vast grasslands, traditional cowsheds and sheepfolds, the lifestyle of local settlements, and authentic local cuisine further enhance the attraction for tourists.

The trail also offers panoramic views of major Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. Recently, infrastructure such as rest areas, water taps, information boards, and tourism information centers has been developed along the route to support visitors.

The rural municipality has also set a goal of boosting local income by linking communities with tourism activities. Efforts are underway to provide tourists with authentic experiences through homestay programs, promotion of local products, and cultural performances.

By integrating nature conservation, cultural preservation, and sustainable tourism development, the Mundum trail is gradually emerging as a promising tourism destination in eastern Nepal.
