Prohibitory order imposed inside Tribhuvan International Airport premises

KATHMANDU: The District Administration Office (DAO), Kathmandu, has imposed a prohibitory order within the premises of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

The order was issued after certain groups and political parties announced plans to stage demonstrations in and around the airport area on February 13.

According to the local administration, the prohibitory order will come into effect from Thursday and remain in place for one month. With the order in force, gatherings of more than five people inside the airport premises for protests such as hunger strikes, sit-ins, encirclements, rallies, demonstrations and assemblies will not be permitted.

In an order issued by Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Paudel, it is stated that the restriction applies to the entire airport premises, including the area from the Golden Gate entry point, all roads within the airport complex, the domestic and international terminal areas, and parking zones.

The order notes that organizing protests in and around highly sensitive areas like the airport could lead to unruly activities such as vandalism and arson by agitated crowds.

However, the administration clarified that, except for the restricted zones, every citizen retains the constitutional right to freedom of expression and to assemble peacefully without arms.

The DAO also stated that if any damage is caused to government, public or private property during pre-announced protest programs, the organizers will be held liable and compensation will be recovered from them.
