Harka Sampang reiterates demand for PM Shah’s apology over India land remarks

KATHMANDU: Chairperson of the Shram Sanskriti Party, Harka Sampang, on Thursday reiterated his demand that Prime Minister Balendra Shah apologize in Parliament for his controversial statement claiming that Nepal had also encroached on Indian territory.

Speaking in the House of Representatives after obtaining time from Speaker DP Aryal, Sampang said the Prime Minister’s remarks made on May 31 must be removed from the parliamentary record.

“We are ready to allow the House to function. However, our only demand is that the statement made by the Prime Minister on May 31 be expunged from the parliamentary record, and that he come to Parliament and apologize,” Sampang said.

He stressed that parliamentary proceedings should move forward in accordance with established rules and procedures.

Sampang stated that his party was prepared to participate in discussions on other items on the parliamentary agenda, but insisted that their concerns must first be addressed.

“We are ready to proceed with the House’s other business, but our demands must be met,” he said. “The Prime Minister must correct the statement that was against the national interest.”

The remarks come amid continued opposition pressure on Prime Minister Shah over his statement regarding Nepal-India territorial issues, which several parties have described as harmful to national sovereignty and integrity.
