KATHMANDU: The government has announced plans to use drones and night-vision cameras to control criminal activities and strengthen border security.
Presenting the government’s policy and program in a joint session of the Federal Parliament on Monday, President Ram Chandra Paudel said facial recognition systems would also be installed at border checkpoints.
The policy and program further states that an integrated border management information system and automated surveillance infrastructure will be established to improve security monitoring.
The government has also pledged to develop the Armed Police Force Nepal into a specialised security force equipped with trained manpower and modern infrastructure.
According to the policy document, the government will strengthen citizen-security relations through border area development program and seek diplomatic solutions to border disputes.
It also states that security-related laws and policies will be professionally revised to safeguard broader national interests.
The government has also committed to reducing foreign dependence in the security sector.
The policy and program states that arrangements will be made to produce logistical and essential security materials domestically for the Nepali Army and other security agencies.
“Professionalism will be enhanced through training and strategic capacity development of security personnel. The National Cadet Corps will also be strengthened,” President Poudel said during the address.
The government has further stated that major development projects will be required to assess potential impacts on national security during the detailed project study phase.
