KATHMANDU: CPN-UML lawmaker and party secretary Padma Aryal has called for the immediate withdrawal of ordinances introduced by the government, warning that they could weaken democratic norms.
Speaking during Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, she said the government’s claim of bringing “new thinking and new momentum” was not reflected in its actions.
Aryal accused the government of trying to avoid scrutiny and evade questions arising from its decisions.
She stressed that matters related to the judiciary should not be influenced by the executive’s will but must follow legal procedures and established principles.
Criticising provisions related to student organisations and trade unions brought through ordinances, she said such moves were unacceptable.
“We are at a critical juncture. The government talks about new thinking and speed, but its actions do not reflect that. It is trying to escape questions on its decisions,” she said.
“The judiciary cannot be shaped according to the Prime Minister’s design,” Aryal added.
She warned that such steps could weaken democratic values and push the system towards authoritarian tendencies.
Stating that Parliament cannot be subordinate to the government, she demanded the immediate repeal of all ordinances presented in the House.
