KATHMANDU: The price of eggs has increased in the domestic market following a decision by the Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association to raise the price.
The association has increased the price by Rs 35 per crate effective from Monday, marking another hike within just four days.
According to association chair Binod Pokharel, the price of medium eggs has now reached Rs 435 per crate, up from Rs 400 earlier.
Similarly, the price of large eggs, previously sold at Rs 450 per crate, has been fixed at Rs 485. The price of extra-large (XL) eggs has increased from Rs 465 to Rs 500 per crate.
The association said the price adjustment was necessary due to a sharp decline in production following outbreaks of bird flu in various parts of the country, which has led to the culling of more than 500,000 layer chickens.
Pokharel said that despite the price hike, farmers are still unable to recover their actual production costs.
He added that rising demand amid reduced supply has also started to affect consumer prices.
The association further warned that without timely government support, many poultry farmers could be forced to exit the sector, saying the price increase was a “compelled decision” under current conditions.
