Singer and actor Prashant Tamang passes away



KATHMANDU: Singer and actor Prashant Tamang has passed away.

According to filmmaker Rajesh Ghatani, Tamang died today at his residence in New Delhi, India. Darjeeling singer Mahesh Sewa also confirmed Tamang’s death, stating that he reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.

Tamang, a Nepali-speaking singer of Indian origin, rose to fame after winning the third season of the Indian reality TV show Indian Idol in 2007 and was widely popular in Nepal. He had sung numerous Nepali songs that remain well known and loved by audiences.

In addition to his singing career, Tamang had acted in several Nepali films, including Gorkha Paltan, Pardeshi, and Pardeshi 2. He had been residing in Delhi in recent years, where he passed away.

Prashant Tamang was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, on 4 January 1983 to Rupa Tamang and Madan Tamang and studied at St Robert School. After the demise of his father in an accident, Tamang left school and joined Kolkata Police as a constable in his father’s place.

In Kolkata Police, he sang for the police orchestra. He married Geeta Thapa (Martha Alley), who is a flight attendant, on 16 February 2011 in Nagaland, India.
