No increase in Internet tariffs, NTA warns of action against overcharging

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has clarified that internet service tariffs have not been increased and warned that action will be taken against service providers charging more than the approved rates or operating without authorization.

Responding to recent media reports about a possible increase in internet charges, the regulatory authority said it had not received any proposal from internet service providers to raise tariffs.

The NTA emphasized that charges imposed by telecommunications service providers must be fair and reasonable.

It also reminded service providers that tariff rates must be submitted for approval at least three months in advance, with the effective date clearly specified, in accordance with NTA directives.

The authority urged consumers to remain aware of their rights under existing laws, which require service providers to publicly disclose approved tariffs and prohibit charging more than the approved rates, increasing fees without prior approval, or operating services without authorization.

The NTA warned that service providers found violating these provisions would face action in accordance with the Telecommunications Act and Regulations.
