Opposition parties agree to end parliamentary deadlock

KATHMANDU: Opposition parties have agreed to end the prolonged obstruction in Parliament following discussions with ruling party leaders at Singha Durbar on Wednesday.

The agreement comes after days of political negotiations aimed at resolving the deadlock that had disrupted House proceedings.

Nepali Congress Whip Nishkal Rai said the opposition has agreed to allow Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal to address the House of Representatives.

The parties have also decided to request the Speaker to remove from the parliamentary record Prime Minister Balen Shah’s remarks regarding the border issue that had triggered the dispute.

Rai said opposition parties concluded that the continued disruption of Parliament was sending a negative message and therefore agreed not to obstruct House proceedings further.

However, he added that the opposition would continue to raise its concerns and draw the government’s attention to the issues it has been advocating.

The parliamentary deadlock had persisted for several days after opposition parties demanded clarification over the Prime Minister’s remarks on Nepal–India border issues.
