Asset Investigation Commission extends disclosure deadline until mid-July

KATHMANDU: The Asset Investigation Commission has extended the deadline for submitting asset details until July 16, granting an additional month for individuals required to file disclosures.

Commission Chair Rajendra Kumar Bhandari said the extension was provided after many officials and former public office holders reported that they were still in the process of collecting property-related documents and needed more time.

“Individuals residing both inside and outside the country repeatedly requested an extension, stating that they were still gathering the necessary details. Based on those requests, the deadline has been extended for the final time,” Bhandari said.

He stressed that no further extension would be granted and urged all concerned individuals to submit their asset declarations within the revised deadline.

According to the commission, more than 3,500 asset declarations have already been received, while over 60 complaints related to property holdings have also been registered.

The commission has called on individuals to submit accurate details along with supporting evidence, stating that the verification and investigation process will begin after the submissions are formally registered.

Officials also noted that some delays may have been caused by difficulties in collecting records following incidents of office vandalism and arson during the Gen-Z movement.

The commission was previously requesting disclosures by June 14. Public officials, former office bearers, and their representatives can submit declarations and complaints in person, by post, or via email.

Formed by the government to investigate the assets of individuals who have held public office since 1991, the five-member commission is currently focused on collecting declarations and complaints before beginning detailed investigations.

Chair Bhandari said the number of submissions continues to rise and expressed confidence that the commission could eventually receive asset disclosures from between 40,000 and 50,000 individuals.

The commission’s mandate includes examining the domestic and foreign assets of current and former political office holders, civil servants, and their family members to determine whether any wealth was accumulated through abuse of public office.
