Former home minister Lekhak alleges ‘revengeful’ detention after release

KATHMANDU: Ramesh Lekhak has accused the government of detaining him in a revengeful and biased manner.

In a statement issued on Friday following his release from 13 days in custody, Lekhak described the report of the commission formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9, 2025, as incomplete and unverified, claiming the criminal charges against him were baseless.

Lekhak was released after the Supreme Court issued a mandamus order directing the government to free him from custody.

“I was detained based on a prejudiced and retaliatory report of the commission, but I have ultimately been released following the order of the honorable Supreme Court,” he said in the statement.

Lekhak said he has always respected the rule of law and believes in justice, adding that he will continue to pursue the remaining legal and political battles related to the case.

He also expressed gratitude to citizens, legal professionals, political leaders, human rights activists and journalists who spoke out in support of his release.

The report submitted by the government-formed probe commission into the September incidents has drawn controversy. Lekhak’s arrest based on the report had also prompted strong criticism of the government from the main opposition and other political actors.
