Preparations begin for oath-taking of newly elected MPs as parliament session nears

KATHMANDU: Preparations have begun for the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected members of the House of Representatives as vote counting in the parliamentary elections approaches its final stage.

According to constitutional provisions, a session of the federal parliament must be convened within 30 days after the final election results are officially announced.

However, a permanent hall to conduct the upcoming parliament meetings and oath-taking ceremony has not yet been fully prepared.

Before the parliament session begins, an oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected lawmakers will be held. As per the procedure, the senior-most member of parliament will first take the oath of office from the President and will subsequently administer the oath to the other lawmakers.

Currently, there is no permanent building available for parliamentary meetings. The situation arose after the parliament building was damaged by a fire during the ‘Gen-Z’ movement, forcing authorities to arrange an alternative venue for regular sessions.

As a temporary solution, preparations are underway to use the multipurpose hall inside the under-construction new parliament building within the Singha Durbar premises.

According to Ekram Giri, spokesperson for the Federal Parliament Secretariat, the construction of the hall has reached its final stage and is expected to be completed within a few weeks.

Meanwhile, the Federal Parliament Secretariat is also planning to organize a two-day orientation program for newly elected lawmakers to enhance their capacity.

Spokesperson Giri said the training will mainly focus on practical aspects such as the legislative process and procedures for raising questions in parliament.
