NC district chiefs urge party to focus on upcoming general election, question necessity of special convention

KATHMANDU: Chairpersons of Nepali Congress from various districts have raised concerns over the legality and necessity of the party’s proposed special convention, urging leaders to concentrate on the upcoming House of Representatives election.

In a press statement released on Wednesday, the district chiefs said that the country is still navigating a sensitive political situation following the events of September 8 and 9. They stressed that with the interim government having announced the general election schedule for March 5, the Congress must advance its responsibilities with focus and discipline.

The statement highlighted that there are differing views among convention representatives regarding the special convention. It reminded that the demand for a special convention arose only because the regular 15th general convention could not be held on schedule, with the membership renewal and distribution process delayed. The regular convention timetable, set by the Central Working Committee on December 1, 2025, has been extended to the end of April, according to the statement.

The district chiefs noted that, as per party statutes, the Central Working Committee alone has the authority to convene conventions, and holding a separate special convention at the central level is not in accordance with party rules. They urged the party to remain united, prioritize the political roadmap, and actively prepare for the elections rather than getting distracted by unofficial gatherings.

The statement also called on the central leadership to take immediate steps to prevent party division and resolve internal issues. The press release was signed by district chiefs from Morang, Jhapa, Khotang, Panchthar, Ilam, Okhaldhunga, Taplejung, and Sankhuwasabha.
