RSP calls emergency Secretariat meeting as unity deal with Ujyalo Nepal hits crisis

KATHMANDU: The party unity agreement between the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and the Ujyalo Nepal Party has fallen into crisis within just two weeks, prompting the RSP to call an emergency meeting of its Secretariat.

According to a notice issued by RSP spokesperson Manish Jha, the party has convened an emergency virtual meeting of the Secretariat at 3:15 pm on Saturday via Zoom on the directive of party chair Rabi Lamichhane. The main agenda of the meeting will be issues related to party unity and organizational integration.

The RSP and Ujyalo Nepal Party had signed a formal unity agreement on December 29, 2025, under which Ujyalo Nepal patron and former minister Kulman Ghising was to be appointed as RSP vice-chair. However, disagreements over the implementation of the deal have escalated, pushing the unity process into uncertainty within two weeks.

Talks held between Rabi Lamichhane and Kulman Ghising on Friday and Saturday failed to reach any conclusion, leading to a breakdown of the agreement. Sources said disputes emerged over seniority, responsibilities, proportional representation lists and the party’s central organizational structure.

Earlier, Ghising had resigned from three ministries, including Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, after facing strong criticism for joining the Citizens’ Government led by Sushila Karki. He later entered into formal negotiations with the RSP.

As the unity crisis deepens, Ghising is now inclined to part ways with the RSP and move forward independently with the Ujyalo Nepal Party, according to sources close to him.

Saturday’s Secretariat meeting is expected to set a decisive direction for the future of the unity process.
