Reconstruction accelerates in Kerung as landslide-affected residents return home

KATHMANDU: Landslide-affected residents in Kerung (Gyirong), in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, have begun returning home from temporary shelters as restoration efforts accelerate in the area.

A series of high-speed landslides triggered by a glacier collapse in the high Himalayan region of Nepal caused extensive damage around the Kerung port area along the China-Nepal border on August 26. The disaster resulted in significant loss of life, while several people were reported missing.

As a lake formed by the landslides posed a serious threat to the safety of residents in nearby villages, local authorities relocated 499 villagers to Kerung city for safety.

Experts were mobilised to assess the risks, including studies of potentially hazardous areas and hydrological monitoring.

The lake that formed above the upper section of the Kerung port area, which was among the areas most severely affected by the landslides, has now been drained. Following the drainage, the local government arranged vehicles to facilitate the return of affected residents.

Residents staying at temporary relocation centres in Kerung city began returning home in an organised manner from Monday.
