KATHMANDU: The Department of Education has directed local governments and schools in Rasuwa affected by the Bhotekoshi flood to provide psychosocial counselling and necessary support to affected students before resuming regular classes.
In a letter issued on Wednesday by the Planning and Programme Division under the Ministry of Education and Sports, the department noted that students affected by the flood may experience fear, anxiety, stress and other psychosocial impacts. It said their psychosocial condition should therefore be assessed before regular classes resume.
The department has asked the concerned schools and local governments to coordinate with health institutions and health workers to assess the psychosocial condition of students.
Where necessary, students should be provided with psychosocial counselling and other required support, and their readiness to return to regular classes should be ensured before resuming normal teaching and learning activities, the department said.
The department has also urged the concerned authorities to operate schools in a safe and child-friendly environment to minimise the adverse impact of the flood on students’ learning.
It directed schools, health institutions and other stakeholders to coordinate effectively and prioritise the educational and psychosocial well-being of flood-affected students.
