KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has called for enhanced international collaboration to tackle increasingly complex and transnational security threats, while reaffirming the country’s enduring commitment to United Nations peacekeeping efforts.
Addressing the fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) at the UN Headquarters in New York on July 8, IGP Karki said security challenges—including terrorism, transnational organized crime, cybercrime, misinformation and disinformation, illicit financial flows, and climate-related insecurity—are becoming more sophisticated and increasingly cross national borders.
Held at the UN Headquarters from July 7 to 8, UNCOPS 2026 brought together ministers, police chiefs, and senior representatives from regional and professional policing organizations to promote international peace, security, and sustainable development through closer cooperation between national police services and United Nations policing.
The Nepali delegation also included Narayan Datta Paudel of the Armed Police Force Nepal.
Karki said the summit comes at a time of mounting global security challenges, emphasizing that evolving cross-border threats demand stronger international partnerships and coordinated responses.
He highlighted the UN’s critical role in protecting civilians, upholding the rule of law, and sustaining peace, stating that its contribution “remains more important than ever.”
Reaffirming Nepal’s long-standing support for UN peacekeeping operations, Karki noted that the country has deployed 17,852 police personnel to peace missions around the world.
“Nepal remains a steadfast and proud contributor to United Nations peace operations,” he said, describing the deployments as a reflection of Nepal’s enduring commitment to international peace and security.
Karki said Nepal Police is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct, placing the protection of civilians—particularly women and children—at the core of its peacekeeping responsibilities. He also highlighted the force’s continued focus on strengthening accountability across all levels.
He reaffirmed Nepal’s support for expanding the deployment of specialized police capabilities in UN peace operations, including formed police units and individual police officers. Karki further underscored the need for closer international cooperation in capacity building, knowledge sharing, skills development, and enhancing operational effectiveness.
“As peace operations evolve, United Nations police must remain adaptable, professional, people-centered, technologically capable, and prepared to address emerging security challenges,” he said.
Karki said the future of UN policing should focus not only on responding to crises but also on preventing conflicts, reinforcing the rule of law, protecting civilians, and helping build resilient national institutions.
He emphasized that UN police must continue to uphold human rights, promote community-oriented policing, foster inclusive leadership, and strengthen partnerships to support lasting peace and security.
Calling for greater multilateral cooperation, innovation, and collective action, Karki urged the international community to work together to effectively address evolving global security challenges.
“Guided by professionalism and partnership, we must continue working together to advance peace, security, and the rule of law for all,” Karki said, concluding his address by reaffirming Nepal’s readiness to contribute. “Nepal remains ready to contribute its part.”
