US carries out fresh airstrikes on Iran as tensions continue to escalate

WASHINGTON DC: The United States has launched another round of strikes against Iran after President Donald Trump warned earlier that Washington would “hit them hard.”

Trump said the latest attacks were carried out in retaliation for what he described as Iran’s bombing of ships a day earlier, adding that any further such actions would trigger an even stronger US response.

Iranian media reported explosions in several areas along the country’s southern coastline, saying the strikes targeted Iranian-controlled islands in the Gulf.

The latest operation follows US strikes on Tuesday, which US Central Command said were conducted in response to attacks on three commercial vessels passing through the Strait. Iran subsequently launched retaliatory strikes on US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait early Wednesday, according to Iranian officials.

Reacting to Trump’s remarks, Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran would not respond to “vulgarity with vulgarity,” but instead would answer “with action: fearlessly and with great valour.”
