Crude pistol, bullets seized inside Siraha prison; 13 detained

SIRAHA: A crude pistol and two rounds of ammunition have been seized from inside Siraha District Prison, leading to the detention of 13 individuals, including a prisoner known as a “naike” (inmate leader).

The weapon was recovered from the possession of Indrajit Yadav during a special inspection conducted by the District Security Committee on Monday, according to Chief District Officer Surendra Paudel.

Paudel said that on Sunday, Yadav and his group assaulted 10 other inmates and forced them out of the prison. Acting on a tip-off, security personnel carried out a search inside the prison and recovered the firearm and bullets.

“All 13 suspects, including Yadav, have been removed from the prison and placed in police custody. Preparations are underway to transfer them to another prison,” Paudel said.

Following Yadav’s arrest, his supporters inside the prison staged protests, chanting slogans and resorting to arson and vandalism. Authorities said additional security measures have been put in place to control the situation.

The prison, which has a capacity of 150 inmates, is currently housing 437 prisoners. Due to overcrowding, clashes had previously broken out in the prison in Shrawan, leaving 13 inmates injured.
