Accidents rise in Jhapa, 18 people die in 25 days



JHAPA: Road accidents have surged in Jhapa, claiming 18 lives across the district between January 15 to February 8, according to the District Traffic Police Office.

On Sunday, 16-year-old Saroj Shrestha, son of Hark Shrestha from Arjundhara-3, died in a tractor accident in Biring Khola, Arjundhara Municipality-7. He fell from the tractor while sand was being loaded and was crushed by its rear wheel.

Meanwhile, Rajan Baskota, a resident of Arjundhara-3, succumbed to injuries sustained in a scooter accident three days earlier. He had been undergoing treatment at B&C Hospital in Birtamod.

On February 4, a scooter (Pr 1-01-018 Pa 167) traveling from Birtamod to Khudunabari struck a pedestrian, also named Baskota, at Garuwa Chowk, Arjundhara-3. The scooty driver, 35-year-old Amrita Rai of Ilam Mai Municipality-3, and the vehicle are in police custody.

Earlier incidents include a tipper accident in Damak on February 4 that killed two people, and three fatalities on January 15. Since then, road accidents have caused daily human losses across the district.
