KATHMANDU: Home Minister Sudan Gurung has said the government did not come to power to make grand speeches but to fulfil the people’s hopes and realise the dream of good governance.
Addressing a programme organised at the old Parliament building in New Baneshwor to mark Gen-Z Martyrs’ Day, Gurung said the blood shed and sacrifices made by his fellow protesters during the street movement remain fresh in his memory.
Expressing his responsibility toward the families of martyrs and those injured in the movement, Gurung urged them to see him not merely as a minister but as their own son, brother or elder brother. He pledged to ensure that citizens’ hopes and trust are not undermined and to carry out his responsibilities with integrity.
Making strong remarks against the old political parties, Gurung warned against attempts to rewrite history or disrespect the movement. He said the Bhadra 23 movement was not driven by a desire for power or arrogance but by the goal of establishing good governance in the country. He said no one should underestimate the change achieved through the mandate and sacrifices of three crore Nepalis.
Gurung said the current government’s objective was not to cling to power but to serve the people. He claimed the government would not allow the trust placed in Prime Minister Balendra Shah and party chair Rabi Lamichhane, as well as the hopes of the people, to fade. He announced a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption, saying he himself would stand with the people if even a single rupee of corruption were found.
He praised the contributions of the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepali Army. Accusing previous governments of misusing security agencies for political interests, Gurung said the current government had created an environment for them to work impartially and was committed to ensuring justice for security personnel as well.
Claiming that his leadership and the younger generation would take the country in a new direction, Gurung said they would prove themselves through their work in the days ahead and would never betray the people’s trust.
