KATHMANDU: Four metric tonnes of non-biodegradable waste were collected during the 691st week of the Bagmati Cleanup Campaign at Guyeshwari Faat in the Pashupati area on Saturday.
The cleanup was carried out under the campaign’s slogan, “Two hours of volunteering a week for the nation.” Volunteers have been cleaning the area since last week after an increase in non-biodegradable waste.
Campaigner Kishor Singh Shahi said biodegradable waste collected during the cleanup was buried in pits at the site. Around 150 saplings of different species were also planted along the Bagmati riverbank.
Former Chief Secretary and campaigner Lilamani Paudel, students, campaign volunteers, employees of the High-Powered Committee for Integrated Development of the Bagmati Civilization, local groups and representatives of various organisations participated in the cleanup.
The campaign, which began on May 18, 2013, has continued every Saturday morning for two hours, including during earthquakes, blockades, the COVID-19 pandemic and adverse weather conditions. Cleanup drives inspired by the campaign are now being conducted at more than 108 locations across the country.
