KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has said the government has directed the electricity regulator to prepare policy reforms aimed at increasing domestic electricity consumption.
Speaking at a programme in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Minister Shrestha said Nepal should not focus solely on expanding electricity generation but also on increasing demand and ensuring efficient use of power. He said the regulator had been instructed to formulate policy measures to encourage greater domestic consumption.
The minister said the government remains committed to managing the country’s growing electricity generation capacity and ensuring its effective utilisation through the national power grid.
He also said the concerned agencies had been directed to develop a more reliable and resilient electricity system to address frequent power disruptions and repeated outages.
On electricity exports, Shrestha said Nepal’s long-term strategy is to expand beyond the Indian and Bangladeshi markets and eventually export power to East Asian countries, including Myanmar and Thailand.
