KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Deputy Parliamentary Party Leader Padma Aryal has accused the government of exhibiting authoritarian and absolutist tendencies during its first 100 days in office.
Speaking during Wednesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Aryal said the formation of the new government had put Nepal’s political culture, constitutional supremacy, separation of powers and citizens’ freedoms under strain.
She alleged that the government had failed to protect national interests, arguing that the Prime Minister’s controversial remarks suggesting Nepal had encroached on Indian territory had undermined the country’s historical dignity and national sovereignty.
Aryal said the Constitution should not be treated as a tool for short-term political convenience or maintaining power, stressing that any attempt to alter or weaken its fundamental provisions would be unacceptable.
She also warned against any move that could undermine Nepal’s federal democratic republican system, multiparty democracy, federal governance structure, inclusive framework or the fundamental rights of citizens.
Aryal said the opposition would continue to hold the government accountable while supporting measures that respect the public mandate, adding that its criticism was not intended merely for political opposition.
Urging the government to learn from its first 100 days in office, she called on it to abandon political vendettas, politically motivated arrests, governance influenced by opaque groups, violations of the rule of law and what she described as a lack of accountability to Parliament.
