KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has warned of a moderate risk of flash floods in several districts across the country due to expected heavy rainfall on Wednesday.
The DHM has urged people, especially those living near small rivers and streams, to remain cautious and take necessary safety measures.
According to the weather forecast, heavy rainfall is likely in some parts of the hilly and southern plains of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. One or two places in Madhesh Province may also experience heavy rainfall.
The DHM said Nepal is currently under the influence of monsoon winds, with the monsoon trough positioned south of its normal location in eastern Nepal and around its average position in the western region, creating conditions favourable for widespread rainfall.
DHM flood expert Binod Parajuli said water levels in small rivers and streams in Ilam, Jhapa, Tehrathum, Panchthar, Dhankuta, Saptari, Sunsari, Morang, Doti and Dadeldhura districts, along with surrounding areas, are likely to rise significantly, increasing the possibility of flash floods.
Most parts of the country received light to moderate rainfall in the past 24 hours, according to the department. Yanjakot of Kaski recorded the highest rainfall during the period at 98.6 millimetres.
