JOMSOM: More than 22,000 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste collected from Mustang has been transported to Pokhara for processing as part of ongoing waste management efforts in the Himalayan district.
The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Jomsom have prioritized waste management to reduce the environmental impact of tourism and climate change.
According to ACAP Jomsom Chief Rajesh Gupta, a total of 22,189 kg of non-biodegradable waste was collected from Gharapajhong, Baragung Muktikshetra and Thasang rural municipalities between Shrawan 2082 (mid-July 2025) and the present.
The collected waste was packed into 2,581 bags and transported by truck to the Green Road Waste Management Pvt. Ltd. processing centre in Pokhara.
ACAP said 10,659 kg of waste was collected during the current fiscal year alone. The collection included 644 kg in Bhadra, 860 kg in Kartik, 1,556 kg in Mangsir, 1,351 kg in Poush, 1,888 kg in Falgun, 2,462 kg in Chaitra, 2,230 kg in Baishakh and 10,659 kg through six collection drives in Asar.
To strengthen waste management in the tourism-heavy district, ACAP has constructed four waste collection centres across three municipalities this year. Last year, eight such centres were established in major tourist areas of Mustang.
Authorities said the initiative aims to maintain the natural environment of Mustang while managing increasing waste generated by tourism activities.
