Enhance disaster preparedness for improved forecasting: Minister Shrestha

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has stressed the need to strengthen disaster preparedness for effective weather forecasting, saying it would help minimize the loss of lives and property.

Speaking at an event organized by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology on Friday, Minister Shrestha said the use of water and weather data is crucial for reducing damage to social, economic, and physical infrastructure caused by rain-induced disasters.

He also emphasized that accurate weather forecasting is equally important for the agriculture sector, particularly in crop management, irrigation, and production planning.

The minister highlighted the urgency of improving understanding of weather systems, which are becoming increasingly uncertain and complex due to climate change. He said promoting research and adopting modern technology would help improve the quality of weather services.

Minister Shrestha added that the ministry is committed to enhancing the effectiveness of weather forecasting through the use of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced algorithms.
